Synopsis

The story of the film centers around the youth Ruhul, who lives with his family in a small hut next to the runway of the international airport. His mother Rahima struggles to support the family by selling milk from a cow bought with a micro credit loan. His sister Fatima works long hours in a garments factory. There’s been no word from their father for over a month, since he left for a job in the Middle East. A madrasa dropout, Ruhul spends his days wandering under the shadow of the planes, aimless and frustrated in his futile efforts to find work. One day at a cyber café he meets Arif, a computer savvy young man who exudes confidence and a sense of purpose. The world Arif introduces him to seems inspiring and new, but eventually Ruhul’s life spirals into a nefarious netherworld of intolerance, violence and ultimately, death…

Synopsis

Necklace is an intriguing tale of our daily lives. Located in the city of Kolkata, it tells a story of two couples belonging to different social strata but their lives got intertwined. Young Biswanath (Ritwik Chakraborty), a chartered accountant in profession, on the day he got promotion in his office bought a gorgeous necklace to gift it to his beautiful wife Sikha (Rituparna Sengupta). He also planned a ‘party’ to celebrate his promotion. But on the very next day in the early morning, a burglar (Rudranil Ghose) broke in to their 3rd floor apartment through the balcony. Luckily the couple woke up on right time, the husband chased the burglar and wife hurriedly put off her necklace to hide it from the burglar. But the burglar, instead of robbing that necklace, preferred to jump from the balcony and fell down from the 3rd floor causing serious injuries. Such unexpected turn of the situation baffled the couple. Neighbors advised them to admit the burglar to the nearby hospital as soon as possible or it might turn in to a police case accusing as an ‘attempt to murder’! Situation became more complicated when burglar s wife (Loket Chatterjee) emerged from nowhere and started accusing Sikha and Biswanath as if they really wanted to kill the burglar! However the burglar got admitted into the hospital and his wife was brought to Biswanath’s apartment to negotiate with her for the amount of money she required to suppress the case from the police. Somehow that expensive necklace was missing from the house and Sikha could not remember where she had hidden it when the burglar was trying to break the window of their bedroom. Devastated Biswanath left for his office leaving behind his wife to settle the issue. Disturbed Sikha searched all corners of the house for that necklace in vain and she had to pass the whole day with the whims of the burglar’s wife who from time to time ordered for ‘continental breakfast’ followed by elaborate Indian lunch, wine, and what not. Meanwhile she took a bath in the plush bathroom, and there she discovered that lovely necklace kept hidden under a night-gown. Soon she adorned her neck with the necklace and demanded its ownership. A new conflict began.
In the office Biswanath was told by his Boss that this could be a new technique that the burglar was using to swindle the flat owners of high the rises, and he knew one such case.
However the story takes 360 degrees turn when burglar’s wife also jumped from the same balcony!!

Synopsis

A tender romance blossoming in Kolkata between law student Ramesh and his friend’s sister Hemnalini is nipped suddenly when his father sends an urgent and mysterious summons from his village home. There, the dutiful son is peremptorily ordered to marry Susheela, daughter of a hapless widow. Ramesh refuses, confesses that his heart belongs to another. But the widow’s fervent plea softens him ultimately. And he concedes, albeit with a heavy heart. The wedding takes place with due ceremony; and Ramesh sets out with his bride on a river boat journey back to Kolkata.

Soon a fierce storm arises; the boat tosses helplessly and finally capsizes in the churning waters. Later that night, Ramesh comes to his senses on a deserted shore under a starlit sky. Some distance away, he sees the unconscious form of a young bride. Her pulse is still beating, and in response to his voice calling ‘Susheela’ she opens her eyes at last. There is no one else in sight, alive or dead. The two move off, take a train to Kolkata, the bride wondering why they were not going to Kashi, but trusting his judgment implicitly.

Hem, his true love, knows nothing of all this. Ramesh has been missing from the evening of her birthday party. They have learnt of his hasty departure from the city, but nothing else. Though she pines inwardly, she is confident that he will return soon.

Back in Ramesh’s new home in Kolkata, the facts of mistaken identity gradually come to light. She is Kamala not Susheela. Her husband is a doctor named Nalinaksha Chatterjee. Ramesh writes an advertisement to trace his whereabouts; but he does not have the heart to break this news to the helpless trusting young girl in his care. He puts her into a boarding school instead. But soon, Hem’s would be suitor Akshay comes to know of Ramesh’s secret and brings proof positive to Hem. Ramesh, unable to handle such a scandal, seeks hiding in Gorakhpur with Kamala.

A devastated Hem is brought to Kashi by her father to help her forget. There she meets Nalinaksha and they warm up to each other.

Kamala in the meanwhile having read the advertisement in an old newspaper, realizes the enormity of the lie she has been living, and walks out determined to drown herself in the river. Ramesh returns and finds her suicide note, searches everywhere to no avail. He does not know that she has been rescued by a courtesan and deposited in Kashi under Nalinaksha’s mother’s care. Kamala now sees her real husband for the first time, but cannot speak up, for he is betrothed to Hem.

Finally, the advertisement she keeps knotted in her saree is discovered, and the whole truth comes to light. Ramesh finally traces Nalinaksha and arrives at his house.

The whole sorry mess raises many questions of head and heart and the validity or otherwise of social conventions. We are left wondering whether true love will finally triumph.
